Luke the beloved physician shared how Jesus said to the two disciples on the way to Emmaus, “O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory? And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself. And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they went: and he made as though he would have gone further. But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them. And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them. And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight”, and in chapter twenty-four and verse thirty-two of his book Luke shared how the two disciples, “eyes were opened, and they knew him” where we read:
And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way,
and while he opened to us the scriptures?
The verse reads, “And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, ...” Luke began with the words, “and they said one to another” or “and the two disciples uttered, declared and proclaimed one to the other”, “did not our heart burn within us” which means “did not our, the two disciples', souls and minds as the fountain and seat of the thoughts, passions, desires, appetites, affections, purposes and endeavors”, “while he talked with us” or “during the time Jesus emitted His voice with sounds and speech toward us, the two disciples” “by the way” which means “along the traveled road”. Luke shared how the two disciples “knew” within their “souls and minds” there was something special about what Jesus was saying to them as they walked to “Emmaus”.
The verse goes on to say, “... and while he opened to us the scriptures?” Luke continued with the words, “and while he opened to us” which means “and during the time when Jesus revealed and exposed to us, the two disciples” “the scriptures” or “the written Holy Writ”? Luke shared how the “hearts” of two disciples were also “burning” within them as Jesus exposed them to the “Holy Scriptures” concerning Him being the Messiah and Christ of God.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus' teaching to the two disciples affected them deep within as He spoke from the “Holy Scriptures”. God has provided His word, the Bible, to give people all they need to receive His Son Jesus as their personal “Lord and Savior”. Those who are wise will read and study the “Holy Scriptures” and allow the Lord to “burn their hearts within them” so they will submit their lives to Jesus Christ.
Next time Luke shares how the two disciples, “rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
