In Psalms chapter ten David said, “the wicked boasts of his heart's desire, and … lies in wait secretly as a lion in his den: he lies in wait to catch the poor: he does catch the poor, when he draws him into his net. He crouches, and humbles himself, that the poor may fall by his strong ones. He has said in his heart, God has forgotten: he hides his face; he will never see it. Arise, O LORD; O God, lift up your hand: forget not the humble”, and in Psalms chapter ten and verse thirteen David asked, “Wherefore does the wicked contemn God?” where we read,
Wherefore does the wicked contemn God? he has said in his heart, You will not require it.
The verse begins, “Wherefore does the wicked contemn God?” David began with the words, “Wherefore does the wicked” which means “upon what grounds, basis or account does the criminal, guilty one and person who is hostile to God” “contemn God” or “spurn, despise and abhor the Supreme judge and ruler who is the True God”. David asked upon what basis do people who are “wicked” despise and abhor the “True Supreme God”.
The verse goes on to say, “he has said in his heart, You will not require it.” David continued with the words, “he has said in his heart” or “the wicked person uttered, declared and proclaimed within their inner man, mind, soul and conscience”, “you will not require it” which means “you, True Supreme God, shall in no way resort to, care for or make an inquisition toward the wicked person's acts and deeds”. David wrote how the wicked person says to themselves that God will not judge or care about anything they have done.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn how David posed a question concerning the reason wicked people “despise and abhor” God. He answered his own question by saying that wicked people say within themselves that God does not care about their evil acts and that He will in no way question them for their deeds. God is all-knowing, and no one “gets away” with any sin, error or wrong. “All have sinned and come short of the glory of God” (See Romans 3:23), and everyone is in need of Jesus who died on the cross for their sins. All sin will be judged, and God requires adjudication for every error, wrong and mistake that people commit. Isaiah the prophet said, “All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.” (See Isaiah 53:6), and anyone who yields to Jesus will be forgiven of their sins and granted everlasting life. Everyone who refuses and rejects Jesus as their “Lord and Savior” will stand on their own merits, and woe be to those who believe themselves able to withstand the judgment of the Holy and Righteous Almighty God.
Next time David says, “You behold mischief and spite, to requite it with your hand”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
