Five Loaves and Two Fishes - Mark 6:38

Mark wrote how Jesus and the disciples, “departed into a desert place by ship privately. And the people saw them departing, and many knew him, and ran afoot thither out of all cities, and outwent them, and came together unto him. And Jesus, when he came out, saw much people, and was moved with compassion toward them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd: and he began to teach them many things. And when the day was now far spent, his disciples came unto him, and said, This is a desert place, and now the time is far passed: He answered and said unto them, Give you them to eat. And they say unto him, Shall we go and buy two hundred pennyworth of bread, and give them to eat?”, and in chapter six and verse thirty-eight of his book, Mark wrote how Jesus asked His disciples, “how many loaves have you?”, and they answered “five, and two fishes” where we read:

He said unto them, How many loaves have you?

go and see. And when they knew, they said, Five, and two fishes.

The verse reads, “He said unto them, How many loaves have you?” Mark began with the words, “He said” which means “Jesus uttered, declared, proclaimed and presented a question” “unto them” or “to His disciples”, “how many loaves have you” which means “what is the number of food cakes composed of flour mixed with water and baked that His disciples possessed”? Mark shared how Jesus questioned His disciples as to the number of “loaves of bread” they had in their possession.

The verse goes on to say, go and see. And when they knew, they said, Five, and two fishes.” Mark continued with the words, “go and see” which means “depart, leave and discover”. “And when they knew” or “and at the time and moment Jesus' disciples discerned, discovered, noticed and understood”, “they said” or “Jesus' disciples uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “five” which means “five loaves of bread”, “and two fishes” or “and two fish”? Mark shared how Jesus instructed His disciples to go amongst the crowd and discover how many loaves they could collect, and when they returned to Him, they disclosed that there were “five loaves of bread” and “two fish”.

When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus sent His disciples on a discovery mission. Though His disciples thought they should send the people to nearby towns and villages to buy food, Jesus instructed them to go among the people and see how much food they possessed. “Five loaves” and “two fish” may not seem like a lot of food for a huge crowd to be fed, but Jesus is able to take “small amounts” and turn them into large. We shall see more of this story in the next few verses, but for now let it suffice to know that we may bring to Jesus whatever “small amount” we have to offer, and when we yield our lives to Him completely, He is able to do great things with our small offering.

Next time Mark shares how Jesus, “commanded them to make all sit down by companies upon the green grass”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
