Five Thousand Men Fed - Mark 6:44

Mark wrote, “when the day was now far spent, his disciples came unto him, and said, This is a desert place, and now the time is far passed: He answered and said unto them, Give you them to eat. And they say unto him, Shall we go and buy two hundred pennyworth of bread, and give them to eat? He said unto them, How many loaves have you? go and see. And when they knew, they said, Five, and two fishes. And he commanded them to make all sit down by companies upon the green grass. And they sat down in ranks, by hundreds, and by fifties. And when he had taken the five loaves and the two fishes, he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and brake the loaves, and gave them to his disciples to set before them; and the two fishes divided he among them all. And they did all eat, and were filled. And they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments, and of the fishes”, and in chapter six and verse forty-four of his book, Mark wrote how, “they that did eat of the loaves were about five thousand men” where we read:

And they that did eat of the loaves were about five thousand men.

The verse reads, “And they that did eat of the loaves ...” Mark began with the words, “and they that did eat” which means “and the people who consumed and devoured” “of the loaves” or “from the food composed of flour mixed with water and baked”. Mark referred to the people who consumed the food Jesus provided.

The verse goes on to say, “... were about five thousand men.” Mark continued with the words, “were about five thousand men” which means “were in number about five thousand male human beings”. Mark shared how there were around “five thousand men” who ate of the food Jesus supplied.

When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we see how many people ate from Jesus' miracle. “Five thousand” was the number of men who were fed, never mind the women and children who were among the crowd. God loves people, and His desire is to save them from their “sins” through His Son Jesus. Jesus not only provides the “physical food” that is necessary for the multitudes, but also supplies the one way for people to inherit “everlasting spiritual life” with Him. Let all who read these words understand Jesus is the Messiah sent from God, and may they yield to Him as their wonderful supplying personal “Savior and Lord”.

Next time Mark shares how Jesus, “constrained his disciples to get into the ship, and go to the other side”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
