Jesus' Disciples Forgot to Take Bread - Mark 8:14

Mark wrote how Jesus and His disciples “came into the parts of Dalmanutha. And the Pharisees came forth, and began to question with him, seeking of him a sign from heaven, tempting him. And he sighed deeply in his spirit, and said, Why does this generation seek after a sign? verily I say unto you, There shall no sign be given unto this generation. And he left them, and entering into the ship again departed to the other side”, and in chapter eight and verse fourteen of his book, Mark wrote how Jesus' disciples, “had forgotten to take bread” again where we read:

Now the disciples had forgotten to take bread,

neither had they in the ship with them more than one loaf.

The verse reads,Now the disciples had forgotten to take bread, ...Mark began with the words, “Now the disciples” which means “also, even and indeed Jesus' students, pupils and attendants” “had forgotten” or “were given over to oblivion, uncared for and neglected” “to take bread” which means “to carry, lay hold of and procure food composed of flour mixed with water and baked”. Mark shared how Jesus' “disciples” neglected to bring “bread” with them.

The verse continues, “... neither had they in the ship with them more than one loaf. Mark added the words, “neither had they” which means “no and not in any way had Jesus' disciples” “in the ship with them” or “in the sailing vessel alongside them” “more than one loaf” which means “any more than one single bread loaf composed of flour mixed with water and baked”. Mark shared how the disciples only had “one loaf” of “bread” with them in the boat.

When we think through Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus' “disciples” were negligent in their responsibilities again. This continues to demonstrates the patience of Jesus with them. Sometimes people take a long time to learn the lessons of Jesus, and when the “disciples” discovered they only brought “one loaf of bread” with them, they were worried and concerned. God knows how frail and needy people are, and because they are “sinful” by nature and do not measure up to His goodness, He sent His Son Jesus to die for their sins so they might live forever with Him. Those who are wise shall consider carefully this story about Jesus' disciples and discover how similar they are to them.

Next time Mark shares how Jesus “charged” His disciples by saying, “take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
