Reminder of the Feeding the Five Thousand - Mark 8:19

Mark wrote how Jesus' “disciples had forgotten to take bread, neither had they in the ship with them more than one loaf. And he charged them, saying, Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod. And they reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because we have no bread. And when Jesus knew it, he said unto them, Why reason you, because you have no bread? perceive you not yet, neither understand? have you your heart yet hardened? Having eyes, see you not? and having ears, hear you not? and do you not remember?”, and in chapter eight and verse nineteen of his book, Mark shared how Jesus asked His disciples if they remembered when He “brake the five loaves among five thousand” where we read:

When I brake the five loaves among five thousand,

how many baskets full of fragments took you up? They said unto him, Twelve.

The verse reads,When I brake the five loaves among five thousand, ...Mark began with the words, “when” which means “at the time and moment” “I brake” or “Jesus broke into fragments and pieces” “the five loaves” which means “the five loaves of bread which were composed of flour mixed with water and baked” “among five thousand” or “toward the five thousand men who were in the multitude”? Mark shared how Jesus reminded His disciples of the time He fed “five thousand men”.

The verse goes on to say, how many baskets full of fragments took you up? They said unto him, Twelve. Mark continued with the words, “how many baskets full” which means “what was the number of wicker baskets filled” “of fragments” or “with pieces and remnants of food” “took you up” which means “did Jesus' disciples gather and collect”? “They said” or “Jesus' disciples uttered, declared, proclaimed and answered Him” “Twelve” which refers to “the twelve baskets full which the disciples collected”. Mark shared how Jesus questioned His disciples as to how many “wicker baskets” of leftover food they collected after He fed the “five thousand”, to which they answered “twelve baskets”.

When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus reminded His disciples of the miracle of feeding the “five thousand men” and their families with “twelve baskets” of leftovers gathered after everyone had eaten. Though Jesus' disciples did not recount this event upon their own, Jesus reminded them. Sometimes His disciples forgot His provision in the past, and when they were concerned about their current situation of having only “one loaf of bread”, they needed reminding. God works on the behalf of people because He loves them, and His desire is to have every person receive His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord” so they can live with Him forever. When difficulties arise, perhaps the best way to know God will work in the present and future is to remember what He has done in the past.

Next time Mark shares how Jesus reminds His disciples about, “the seven among four thousand”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
