The Wind Ceased - Mark 6:51

Mark wrote how Jesus, “constrained his disciples to get into the ship, and to go to the other side before unto Bethsaida, while he sent away the people. And when he had sent them away, he departed into a mountain to pray. And when even was come, the ship was in the midst of the sea, and he alone on the land. And he saw them toiling in rowing; for the wind was contrary unto them: and about the fourth watch of the night he came unto them, walking upon the sea, and would have passed by them. But when they saw him walking upon the sea, they supposed it had been a spirit, and cried out. For they all saw him, and were troubled. And immediately he talked with them, and said unto them, Be of good cheer: it is I; be not afraid”, and in chapter six and verse fifty-one of his book, Mark wrote how, “the wind ceased” where we read:

And he went up unto them into the ship; and the wind ceased:

and they were sore amazed in themselves beyond measure, and wondered.

The verse reads, “And he went up unto them into the ship; and the wind ceased:” Mark began with the words, “and he went up” which means “and Jesus ascended and rose to go” “unto them” which means “toward His disciples” “into the ship” or “in the boat or sailing vessel”; “and the wind ceased” which means “and the violent agitation and stream of air and very strong tempestuous wind grew tired and relaxed”. Mark shared how the “tempestuous wind” stopped as soon as Jesus stepped into the boat.

The verse goes on to say, and they were sore amazed in themselves beyond measure, and wondered.” Mark continued the words, “and they were sore amazed” which means “and the disciples were greatly astonished and thrown into wonderment” “in themselves beyond measure” or “within their own selves out of an exceeding rank and need, abundantly and supremely”, “and wondered” or “and marveled and admired”. Mark shared how Jesus' disciples marveled at Him as they were astonished at His ability.

When we think through Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus entered the troubled “ship” in which the disciples were sailing and the tumultuous “winds” stopped blowing. We can imagine the disciples' amazement at the power of Jesus as He was able to calm the storm. God is omnipotent, and yet, He desires to have a relationship with every person who will receive His Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”. Those who choose to examine the power of Jesus will not only find themselves in great amazement, but also marvel at the “wonder” of who He is.

Next time Mark shares how Jesus' disciples, “considered not the miracle of the loaves”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
