No Sign Given to This Generation - Mark 8:12

Mark wrote how Jesus and His disciples “came into the parts of Dalmanutha. And the Pharisees came forth, and began to question with him, seeking of him a sign from heaven, tempting him”, and in chapter eight and verse twelve of his book, Mark wrote how Jesus said, “there shall no sign be given unto this generation” where we read:

And he sighed deeply in his spirit, and said, Why does this generation seek after a sign?

verily I say unto you, There shall no sign be given unto this generation.

The verse reads,And he sighed deeply in his spirit, and said, Why does this generation seek after a sign?Mark began with the words, “and he sighed deeply” which means “and Jesus drew up deeply sighs from the bottom of his chest”, “and said” or “and uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “why does this generation” which means “for what reason or cause does this group of men very like each other in endowments, pursuits and character” “seek after a sign” or “wish for, crave, demand and clamor for a mark, indication or token”? Mark shared how Jesus “sighed” with great intensity as He questioned what reason this “group of people with similar in pursuits and character” want to see a “token or indicator”.

The verse continues, verily I say unto you, There shall no sign be given unto this generation. Mark added the word, “verily” which means “truly and surely” “I say unto you” or “Jesus utters, declares and proclaims to the Pharisees”, “there shall no sign” which means “there would not be a mark, indicator or token” “be given” or “granted, bestowed, supplied or furnished” “unto this generation” which means “to this group of people similar to each other in endowments, pursuits and character”. Mark shared how Jesus stated for fact that “no mark, token or indicator” would be “granted and bestowed” to the people who belonged to the Pharisees or their ilk.

When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus limited His “miracle working” in front of people. Jesus was not there to make a “show” of His miracles, He was there to help people and let them know He was and is the Messiah sent from God. Many people say things such as, “if God would only do this or if God would only show me that, then I would believe in Him”. Jesus performed supernatural work after supernatural work, and those who examine His life should find more than sufficient “signs” that He is who He claimed to be. Those who are wise will yield their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord” and find a relationship with Him to be all the “sign” they will ever need.

Next time Mark shares how Jesus “left them” and “entered into the ship again”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
