Jesus' Troubled Disciples - Mark 6:50

Mark wrote how Jesus, “constrained his disciples to get into the ship, and to go to the other side before unto Bethsaida, while he sent away the people. And when he had sent them away, he departed into a mountain to pray. And when even was come, the ship was in the midst of the sea, and he alone on the land. And he saw them toiling in rowing; for the wind was contrary unto them: and about the fourth watch of the night he came unto them, walking upon the sea, and would have passed by them. But when they saw him walking upon the sea, they supposed it had been a spirit, and cried out”, and in chapter six and verse fifty of his book, Mark wrote how Jesus' disciples, “all saw him, and were troubled” where we read:

For they all saw him, and were troubled.

And immediately he talked with them, and said unto them, Be of good cheer: it is I; be not afraid.

The verse reads, “For they all saw him, and were troubled.” Mark began with the words, “for they all saw him” which means “because, since and on account that each, every, the whole and everyone of the disciples observed and noticed Jesus”, “and were troubled” which means “and were agitated, disturbed, anxious, distressed and removed from calmness”. Mark shared how each of the “disciples” “observed” Jesus and were “anxious and distressed”.

The verse continues, And immediately he talked with them, and said unto them, Be of good cheer: it is I; be not afraid.” Mark added the words, “and immediately” which means “and straightway and forthwith” “he talked with them” or “Jesus spoke, conveyed words to declare His mind and disclose His thoughts”, “and said unto them” or “and uttered, declared and proclaimed to His disciples”, “be of good cheer” which means “be of good courage”: “it is I” or “It's me Jesus” “be not afraid” which means “do not be fearful, venerate or alarmed”. Mark shared how Jesus “straightway” began to speak with His “disciples” and told them to “take courage” because it was Him and they did not need to be fearful.

When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus' disciples observed Him and were greatly afraid. He “immediately” began to encourage them and told them to be “bold and brave” because it was Him whom they saw. God wants every person to be in a relationship with Him through His Son Jesus, and when they yield their lives to Him, there is no need to be “afraid” any more. Jesus had a plan to “save” His disciples, and He has a plan to “save” every person who submits to Him.

Next time Mark shares how Jesus, “went up unto them in the ship; and the wind ceased”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
