Give Me John the Baptist's Head - Mark 6:25

Mark wrote how “Herod feared John, knowing that he was a just man and an holy, and observed him; and when he heard him, he did many things, and heard him gladly. And when a convenient day was come, that Herod on his birthday made a supper to his lords, high captains, and chief estates of Galilee. And when the daughter of the said Herodias came in, and danced, and pleased Herod and them that sat with him, the king said unto the damsel, Ask of me whatsoever you will, and I will give it to you. And he swore unto her, Whatsoever you shall ask of me, I will give it to you, unto the half of my kingdom. And she went forth, and said unto her mother, What shall I ask? And she said, The head of John the Baptist”, and in chapter six and verse twenty-five of his book, Mark wrote how Herodias' daughter, “came in straightway with haste unto the king, and asked, saying, I will that you give me … the head of John the Baptist” where we read:

And she came in straightway with haste unto the king, and asked, saying,

I will that you give me by and by in a charger the head of John the Baptist.

The verse reads, “And she came in straightway with haste unto the king, and asked, saying, ...” Mark began with the words, “and she came in straightway” or “and Herodias' daughter entered and came forth immediately” “with haste” which means “with earnestness, diligence and most earnestly” “unto the king” or “to King Herod”, “and asked” which means “and begged, requested and required”, “saying” or “uttering, declaring and proclaiming”. Mark shared how Herodias' daughter went to King Herod “immediately” and requested the following.

The verse continues, I will that you give me by and by in a charger the head of John the Baptist.” Mark added the words, “I will that you give me” which means “Herodias' daughter desired that King Herod grant, bestow, furnish and supply her” “by and by in a charger” or “instantly, forthwith and in that hour within a dish, plate or platter” “the head of John the Baptist” which refers to “John the Baptist's head of his body”. Mark shared how Heriodias' daughter asked King Herod for John the Baptist's “head” on a “platter”.

When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we see how Herodias' daughter did as her mother requested. She quickly went into Herod and asked him for John the Baptist's head to be brought to her on a “platter”. This may seem to be a gruesome end to the “fore-runner” of Jesus Christ's life, however, God had a plan, and people were to be “saved” through the carrying out of His design. God's desire is to have a personal relationship with everyone through His Son Jesus, and when they yield their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”, they not only shall align with His plan but also inherit “everlasting life” with Him.

Next time Mark shares how King Herod, “was exceeding sorry”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
