The Ship in the Midst of the Sea - Mark 6:47

Mark wrote how Jesus, “constrained his disciples to get into the ship, and to go to the other side before unto Bethsaida, while he sent away the people. And when he had sent them away, he departed into a mountain to pray.”, and in chapter six and verse forty-six of his book, Mark wrote how, “the ship was in the midst of the sea, and he alone on the land” where we read:

And when even was come, the ship was in the midst of the sea, and he alone on the land.

The verse reads, “And when even was come, the ship was in the midst of the sea, ...” Mark began with the words, “and when” which means “and at the time and moment” “even was come” or “the evening or from six o'clock p.m. to the beginning of night”, “the ship was in the midst of the sea” which means “the boat or sailing vessel was in the middle of the sea upon which the disciples were sailing”. Mark shared how the “evening time” came and the “boat” the disciples were in was in the “middle of the sea”.

The verse goes on to say, “... and he alone on the land.” Mark continued with the words, “and he alone” which means “and Jesus was by Himself forsaken, destitute, only and merely” “on the land” or “upon the arable land, standing place, tract of land, territory and region”. Mark shared how Jesus was by Himself upon the land which bordered the sea.

When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we see a further development in this story. Though the disciples were sent upon the sea to travel to the other side, Jesus went into a mountain to pray. After some time, the disciples were in the “ship” in the middle of the “sea” and Jesus was upon the dry ground. God cares about every person, and He knows where they are even when they do not know. He desires to have a relationship with Him through His Son Jesus, and when they yield their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”, they can count on Him for every provision even when they are unaware.

Next time Mark shares how Jesus saw His disciples, “toiling in rowing; for the wind was contrary unto them”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
