It is a Spirit - Mark 6:49

Mark wrote how Jesus, “constrained his disciples to get into the ship, and to go to the other side before unto Bethsaida, while he sent away the people. And when he had sent them away, he departed into a mountain to pray. And when even was come, the ship was in the midst of the sea, and he alone on the land. And he saw them toiling in rowing; for the wind was contrary unto them: and about the fourth watch of the night he came unto them, walking upon the sea, and would have passed by them”, and in chapter six and verse forty-nine of his book, Mark wrote how Jesus' disciples, “supposed it had been a spirit” where we read:

But when they saw him walking upon the sea, they supposed it had been a spirit, and cried out:

The verse reads, “But when they saw him walking upon the sea, ...” Mark began with the words, “but when” which means “however at the time and moment” “they saw him” or “the disciples observed and notice Jesus” “walking upon the sea” which means “ambling and treading upon the sea waters”. Mark began to share what happened when Jesus' disciples observed Jesus “walking” upon the “sea water”.

The verse goes on to say, “... they supposed it had been a spirit, and cried out:” Mark continued with the words, “they supposed” which means “Jesus' disciples were of the opinion and thought” “it had been a spirit” or “Jesus was a ghost, apparition or specter”, “and cried out” or “and raised a cry from the depth of the throat or screamed aloud”. Mark shared how Jesus' disciples thought He was an “apparition” and they began to “scream”.

When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we can imagine this scene as Jesus' disciples observed Him “walking upon the sea” and concluded He was a “ghost” as they “screamed aloud”. Jesus knew what He was doing even though He acted like He would “pass the disciples by”. Though He was thought to be an “apparition”, Jesus was their Lord and would soon save them. Recognizing Jesus for who He is and His purpose should make everyone who studies His life submit to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord” and receive “everlasting life” promised by God His Father.

Next time Mark shares how Jesus' disciples, “all saw him, and were troubled”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
