Where Can We Get Bread in the Wilderness? - Mark 8:4

Mark wrote, “In those days the multitude being very great, and having nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples unto him, and said unto them, I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now been with me three days, and have nothing to eat. And if I send them away fasting to their own houses, they will faint by the way: for divers of them came from far”, and in chapter eight and verse four of his book, Mark shared how Jesus disciples' asked Him, “From where can a man satisfy these men with bread here in the wilderness?” and began to speak to them again where we read:

And his disciples answered him,

From where can a man satisfy these men with bread here in the wilderness?

The verse reads, “And his disciples answered him, ...Mark began with the words, “and his disciples” which means “and Jesus' students, pupils and attendants” “answered him” or “responded and began to speak to Jesus”. Mark shared how Jesus' disciples understood Him implication about the people needing food and began to respond to Him with the following question.

The verse goes on to say, ... From where can a man satisfy these men with bread here in the wilderness? Mark continued with the words, “from where” which means “in what place, origin, condition or source” “can a man satisfy” or “is a certain person able to feed and fill” “these men” which means “all these people” “with bread” or “with food composed of flour mixed with water and baked” “here in the wilderness” which means “hither and in this place of solitude which is an uninhabited waste region”. Mark shared how Jesus' “disciples” wondered where in the “deserted place they were located” they could find enough food to “fill” all these people.

When we think through Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus' “disciples” were once again only looking at their “physical” resources to “fill” the need for food. Jesus was with them, and they obviously forgot how He fed five thousand men and their families previously. God is the “Creator” of all things, and nothing is impossible for Him. Like most people, Jesus' disciples had their focus on the “natural” verses the “supernatural” way found in Jesus. The only way people truly “change” is to yield themselves to Jesus Christ as their personal “Savior and Lord”. They resign to themselves and their “natural” way of doing things and find that Jesus is able to do “exceeding abundantly above all they ask or think”. Let all who read these words never forget to factor in “God” when there seems to be no other solution.

Next time Mark shares how Jesus asked His disciples, “how many loaves do you have?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
