Jesus Divides the Fishes and Loaves - Mark 6:41

Mark wrote, “when the day was now far spent, his disciples came unto him, and said, This is a desert place, and now the time is far passed: He answered and said unto them, Give you them to eat. And they say unto him, Shall we go and buy two hundred pennyworth of bread, and give them to eat? He said unto them, How many loaves have you? go and see. And when they knew, they said, Five, and two fishes. And he commanded them to make all sit down by companies upon the green grass. And they sat down in ranks, by hundreds, and by fifties”, and in chapter six and verse forty-one of his book, Mark wrote what happened when Jesus, “had taken the five loaves and two fishes” where we read:

And when he had taken the five loaves and the two fishes, he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and brake the loaves, and gave them to his disciples to set before them; and the two fishes divided he among them all.

The verse reads, “And when he had taken the five loaves and the two fishes, he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and brake the loaves, ...” Mark began with the words, “and when” which means “and at the time and moment” “he had taken” which means “Jesus procured and apprehended” “the five loaves” or “the five breads composed of flour mixed with water and baked” “and the two fishes” which refers to “the two little fish the disciples brought Him”, “he looked up to heaven” which means “Jesus gazed and stared into the region above the sidereal heavens, the seat of order of things eternal and consummately perfect where God dwells and other heavenly beings”, “and blessed” or “and praised, celebrated with praises and consecrated the loaves and fish with solemn prayers”, “and brake the loaves” which means “broke in pieces the breads composed of flour mixed with water and baked”. Mark shared how Jesus received the “five loaves” and “two fish” and gazed into “heaven as He consecrated them in prayer and broke them into pieces.

The verse continues, “... and gave them to his disciples to set before them; and the two fishes divided he among them all.” Mark added the words, “and gave them” which means “and granted, bestowed, furnished and supplied the broken pieces of the five loaves and two fish” “to his disciples” or “to Jesus' pupils, students and attendants” “to set before them” which means “to commit, commend, put forth and present to the crowd of people”; “and the two fishes” or “and the two fish” “divided he among them all” which means “separated, distributed, bestowed and imparted to each, every, the whole and everyone of the people assembled”. Mark shared how Jesus “gave” His disciples the broken pieces of the “five loaves and two fish” to distribute to every person within the crowd of people.

When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus was thorough and methodical in the way He handled the “five loaves and two fish” which were brought to Him. First, He gave honor to God by blessing the food, then He broke the “five loaves and two fish” into pieces. Afterward, He distributed the food to His disciples who gave it to the crowd of people. God is a God of order, and He knows what He is doing in both the “physical” world and in the “spiritual world”. Those who are wise will study the life of Jesus and discover His “purpose filled” life which was spent to “save” people from their sins, and when they know who He is, may they yield their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”.

Next time Mark shares how the people, “did all eat, and were filled”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
