A House Built on a Rock - Luke 6:48

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus said, “Whosoever comes to me, and hears my sayings, and does them, I will show you to whom he is like”, and in chapter six and verse forty-eight of his book Luke shares how Jesus continued, “he is like a man which built an house … on a rock” where we read:

He is like a man which built an house, and dug deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock.

The verse reads, “He is like a man which built an house, and dug deep, and laid the foundation on a rock:” Luke began with the words, “he is like a man” or “the person who comes to Jesus, hears His sayings and does them is similar to and resembles a human being whether male or female” “which built an house” which means “who constructed, founded and established a dwelling place, habitation or abode”, “and dug deep” or “and made a deep hole in the ground”, “and laid the foundation” which means “and set, put and placed the first principle and sub-structure” “on a rock” or “upon a large stone or rocky ground”. Luke shared how Jesus declared the person who listens to Him and does as He says to be like a person who “constructs” a “dwelling place” upon a “deep rock based foundation”.

The verse continues, “and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock.” Luke added the words, “and when” which means “and at the time and moment” “the flood arose” or “the flood-tide or overflowing of a sea or river arrives or comes into existence”, “the stream beat vehemently” which means “the torrent or river breaks, bursts and dashes” “upon that house” or “on that dwelling place, habitation or abode”, “and could not shake it” which means “and was unable and incapable of agitating, causing to totter, disturbing, overthrowing and destroying the house”: “for it was founded upon a rock” or “because, since and on account that the dwelling place was established and made stable on a large stone or rocky ground”. Luke shared how Jesus said when the “overflowing flood” comes against the house built upon a rock, the house would remain unharmed.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus employed this first part of His “parable” to show how important it is for a person to “build their foundation” upon a rock. Hearing and obeying Jesus becomes a great and solid “foundation” upon which a person may build their lives. Storms, floods, trials and troubles will enter a person's life, and the “foundation” they have built upon will be revealed at that time. Those who believe and trust in Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord” and learn from Him will enjoy the most solid “foundation” they will ever have, and when the difficulties come, their house shall stand.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “he that hears, and does not, is like a man that … built an house upon the earth”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
