The Disciple is Not Above His Master - Luke 6:40

The beloved physician Luke shared how Jesus, “spoke a parable unto them, Can the blind lead the blind? shall they not both fall into the ditch?”, and in chapter six and verse forty of his book Luke shares how Jesus said, “the disciple is not above his master” where we read:

The disciple is not above his master: but every one that is perfect shall be as his master.

The verse reads, “The disciple is not above his master:” Luke began with the words, “the disciple” or “the student, pupil and attendant” “is not above his master” which means “is not beyond or more than the disciple's teacher or instructor”. Luke shared how Jesus said the “student” of a “teacher” is not “beyond or more” than the teacher themselves.

The verse continues, but every one that is perfect shall be as his master. Luke added the words, “but every one” which means “however, nevertheless, nonetheless, notwithstanding, moreover and each, every, all, the whole and everyone” “that is perfect” or “who is fit, complete, arranged and made to what they ought to be” “shall be as his master” which means “will exist in likeness to that disciple's teacher or instructor”. Luke shared how Jesus told the disciples who were listening to Him that the “completed and mature” “student” will be “like” his “teacher”.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus told those listening to Him that people become “like” their teachers. In most cases, “teachers say, and students do”, and any variation from that is an approbation to what they have learned. Jesus knew the people He was speaking to were “taught” to be the way they were, and His teachings would be in great contrast with what they knew. God sent His Son Jesus into the world to share what the Kingdom of God is like, and the principles He shared challenged all who heard them. Only by submitting one's life to Jesus do they receive forgiveness for their errors and wrongs, and they also recive the power to live according to the teachings of their “Master” Jesus.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus asks, “why behold you the mote that is in your brother's eye?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
