Mary Called Magdalene - Luke 8:2

Luke the beloved physician shared how Jesus, “went throughout every city and village, preaching and showing the glad tidings of the kingdom of God: and the twelve were with him”, and in chapter eight and verse two of his book Luke shared how Jesus encountered, “Mary called Magdalene” where we read:

And certain women, which had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities,

Mary called Magdalene, out of whom went seven devils,

The verse reads, “And certain women, which had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities, ...” Luke began with the words, “and certain women” or “and particular female human beings”, “which had been healed” which means “who were cured, made whole and restored to health” “of evil spirits” or “from wicked, bad and diseased ones who are devoid of all or at least all grosser matter, and possessed of the power of knowing, desiring, deciding and acting” “and infirmities” which means “and weaknesses, frailties and feebleness of health and sicknesses”. Luke shared how particular “women” whom Jesus “cured and delivered” from “wicked spirits” and “frailties” also followed Jesus through the cities and villages.

The verse goes on to say, “Mary called Magdalene, out of whom went seven devils,” Luke continued with word, “Mary” whose means “their rebellion” “called Magdalene” or “who was from Magdala and saluted and bidden by the name Magdalene which means a tower”, “out of whom” which means “from Mary called Magdalene” “went seven devils” or “emitted, emanated, issued and departed seven demons or evil spirits or messengers and ministers of the devil”. Luke shared how “Mary called Magdalene” whom Jesus had cast out “seven evil spirits” also followed Jesus into the “villages and cities”.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn about the crowd of people who “traveled” with Jesus as He ministered to the all the “cities and villages” He visited. Jesus' “twelve disciples” were with Him. Several women whom Jesus “healed” were with Him, and “Mary called Magdalene” from whom Jesus cast out “seven devils” was with Him. Jesus shared the “gospel” of the Kingdom of God with people everywhere as He was accompanied by an entourage of people who believed in Him. God the Father continues to share the “gospel” or “good news” of His Kingdom through His Son Jesus Christ along with His believers throughout the world, and those who yield their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord” will spend all of eternity forever with Him.

Next time we see Luke shares about, “Joanna the wife of Chuza Herod's steward, and Susanna, and many others, which ministered unto him of their substance”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
