The Disciples of John Shown Things - Luke 7:18

Luke the beloved physician wrote how Jesus raised the widow of Nain's son, and there came, “a fear on all: and they glorified God, saying, That a great prophet is risen up among us; and, That God has visited his people. And this rumor of him went forth throughout all Judaea, and throughout all the region round about”, and in chapter seven and verse eighteen of his book Luke shared how, “the disciples of John showed him … these things” where we read:

And the disciples of John showed him of all these things.

The verse reads, “And the disciples of John showed him ...” Luke began with the words, “and the disciples of John” or “and the students, pupils and attendants of John the Baptist whose name means Jehovah is a gracious giver” “showed him” which means “brought tidings, word, report, proclamations and declarations to John”. Luke shared how the “students” of John the Baptist told him what Jesus did.

The verse goes on to say, “... of all these things.” Luke continued with the words, “of all” which means “pertaining to each, every, the whole and everyone of” “these things” or “the things which Jesus did among the people”. Luke shared how John the Baptist's “disciples” told him about each and everything that Jesus did and said.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn how John the Baptist's “disciples” must have been among the crowd of people watching Jesus because they “reported” back to John what Jesus did. They themselves were amazed by Jesus, and because John was the “fore-runner” to the Messiah Jesus, they wanted John to know what was happening. We shall discover John's response to his “disciples” in our next verse, but for now let it suffice us to know that telling others about what Jesus did is good for all who have experienced and come to know Him. God's desire is for all people to have a personal relationship with Him through His Son Jesus, and those who truly encounter Him will want everyone else to know as well.

Next time Luke shares how John's disciples are sent to ask Jesus, “are you he that should come? Or look we for another?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
