The Dead Sits Up and Speaks - Luke 7:15

Luke the beloved physician wrote, “And it came to pass the day after, that he went into a city called Nain; and many of his disciples went with him, and much people. Now when he came near to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the city was with her. And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not. And he came and touched the bier: and they that bare him stood still. And he said, Young man, I say unto you, Arise”, and in chapter seven and verse fifteen of his book Luke shared how, “he that was dead sat up, and began to speak” where we read:

And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother.

The verse reads, “And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak.” Luke began with the words, “and he that was dead” or “and the widow's son who had breathed his last, expired, was deceased and departed” “sat up” which means “raised himself to sit upright and erect”, “and began to speak” or “and made a beginning of speaking”. Luke shared how the widow's deceased son “raised up” and starting talking.

The verse continues, “And he delivered him to his mother.” Luke added the words, “and he delivered him” which means “and Jesus gave and supplied the deceased son” “to his mother” or “to the deceased son's female progenitor or ancestor”. Luke shared how Jesus presented this once dead son to his mother.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we see the miracle working power of Jesus over death. God sent His Son into the world to demonstrate His power over “death” itself, and when this widow's son rose from that funeral couch, Jesus carried out God's desires. “God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (See John 3:16), and because God's intention is to have people live with Him forever, He showed how He is more powerful that “death”. Those who believe and trust in His Son Jesus will receive forgiveness of their sins and “eternal life” promised by God. Let this “gospel” idea be presented to every person throughout the world.

Next time Luke shares how, “there came a fear on all”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
