The Good or Evil Treasure of the Heart - Luke 6:45

The beloved physician Luke shared how Jesus said, “a good tree brings not forth corrupt fruit; neither does a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. For every tree is known by his own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather they grapes”, and in chapter six and verse forty-five of his book Luke shares how Jesus talked about, “the good treasure” or the “evil treasure” that is within people, where we read:

A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

The verse reads, “A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth that which is good;” Luke began with the words, “a good man” or “a useful, salutary, pleasant, agreeable, joyful, happy and excellent person whether male or female” “out of the good treasure” which means “from the useful, salutary, pleasant, agreeable, joyful, happy and excellent storehouse, repository and magazine” “of his heart” or “belonging to the good man's soul or mind as it is the fountain and seat of the thoughts, passions, desires, appetites, affections, purposes and endeavors” “brings forth that which is good” which means “bears and produces the things which are useful, salutary, pleasant, agreeable, joyful, happy and excellent”. Luke shared how Jesus said the “good treasure” of a person's “soul and mind” produces “good” things.

The verse goes on to say, “and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.” Luke continued with the words, “and an evil man” which means “and an annoying, diseased, blind and wicked person whether male or female” “out of the evil treasure” or “from the annoying, diseased, blind and wicked storehouse, repository and magazine” “of his heart” which means “belonging to the evil man's soul or mind as it is the fountain and seat of the thoughts, passions, desires, appetites, affections, purposes and endeavors” “brings forth that which is evil” or “bears and produces the things which are annoying, diseased, blind and wicked”: “for of the abundance” which means “because, since and on account that from the surplus and superabundance” “of the heart” or “pertaining to the evil person's soul or mind as it is the fountain and seat of the thoughts, passions, desires, appetites, affections, purposes and endeavors” “his mouth speaks” which means “the evil person's orifice in their face used for speech and eating utters and articulates sounds in order to declare their mind an disclose their thoughts”. Luke shared how Jesus said people who are “evil hearted” produce that which is “evil”, and their “mouths” reveal what is in their “souls and minds”.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus said it was the “heart” of a person that determines whether they produce “good” or “evil”. People who are “good” produce “good fruit” from their lives, and their attitudes, actions and words reveal what is in their “hearts”, and those who are “evil” produce “evil fruit”, and their attitudes, actions and words reveal their “souls and minds” as well. God the Father sent His Son into the world to “save” people from their “evil” and “sinful” hearts to give them a “new heart” which produces “good”. Paul the apostle wrote, if you shall confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and shall believe in your heart that God has raised him from the dead, you shall be saved. For with the heart man believes unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” (See Romans 10:9-10), and those who are wise will yield their “hearts” to Jesus so He can create a “good fruit” bearing “soul” within them.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus asks, “why call you me, Lord, Lord?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
