Can the Blind Lead the Blind? - Luke 6:39

The beloved physician Luke shared how Jesus said, “Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that you mete withal it shall be measured to you again”, and in chapter six and verse thirty-nine of his book Luke shares how Jesus asked, “can the blind lead the blind?” where we read:

And he spoke a parable unto them, Can the blind lead the blind? shall they not both fall into the ditch?

The verse reads, “And he spoke a parable unto them, Can the blind lead the blind?” Luke began with the words, “and he spoke” or “and Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed” “a parable unto them” which means “an earthly story with a heavenly meaning to the disciples who were listening to Him”, “can the blind” or “are those who cannot see or have opaque or smoky sight able and capable to”, “lead the blind” which means “to be a guide or show the way to people who cannot see or have opaque or smoky sight”?. Luke shared how Jesus presented another earthly story with a heavenly meaning to the disciples who were listening to them which included the question as to the ability of people who are unable to see “leading” people who cannot see.

The verse goes on to say, shall they not both fall into the ditch? Luke continued with the words, “shall they not both fall” which means “will not both of the people who are blind descend, be thrown and thrust down” “into the ditch” or “into a pit, hole or cistern”? Luke shared how Jesus questioned as to whether both of the “blind people” will be “thrust down” into a pit or hole.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus shared another “parable” with the disciples who were listening to Him. This time He employed the example of a “blind” person leading another “blind” person. He said they would both “fall” into a “pit or hole” by doing so. The idea was not only “physical” in nature, but also “spiritual”. Those who opposed Jesus' teachings were “spiritually blind”, and they were “leading” other people who were “spiritually blind”. Jesus came to give “spiritual sight” to people who will yield their lives to Him, and when a person submits to Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”, they shall see like they have never seen before.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “the disciple is not above his master”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
