Why Do You Call Jesus Lord Lord? - Luke 6:46

Luke the beloved physician wrote how Jesus said, “a good tree brings not forth corrupt fruit; neither does a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. For every tree is known by his own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather they grapes. A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks”, and in chapter six and verse forty-six of his book Luke shares how Jesus asked, “why call you me, Lord, Lord?” where we read:

And why call you me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?

The verse reads, “And why call you me, Lord, Lord, ...” Luke began with the words, “and why call you me” or “and for what reason and cause do the people listening to Jesus salute, bid and give Him the title of”, “Lord” which means “the One to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master, and the title given to God the Messiah”, “Lord” or “the One to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master, and the title given to God the Messiah”. Luke shared how Jesus questioned the disciples listening to Him as to the reason they addressed Him as their “master” two times (for emphasis) when the following is not kept.

The verse continues, “... and do not the things which I say?” Luke added the words, “and do not the things which ” or “and do not make, produce and provide the ideas within which” “I say” or “Jesus utters, declares, directs, instructs and proclaims”? Luke shared how Jesus completed His question by asking why those “listening” to Him did not “produce, follow and act upon” the ideas He was teaching them.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we see the incongruity within the people to whom Jesus was speaking. Though these “disciples” were addressing Jesus as their “Lord”, (which was repeated twice for emphasis), they were not acting as though He was their “Lord” at all. A “Lord” speaks and directs the activities and actions of others, and they “obey” them, however, Jesus was known as the “Lord” of those to whom He spoke, but they did not “obey” Him at all. What a person really believes is revealed by their attitudes, actions and words, and if Jesus is the “Lord” of their life, people will know it very quickly, however, if another lord “rules” in their hearts, their very presence will project who they follow. God desires to have a personal relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and when they yield their lives to Him as their “Savior and Lord”, He changes their hearts and attitudes so they reflect the teachings of Christ and not of the wicked ones within the world.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus asks, “whoever comes to me, and hears my sayings”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
