People Begging Jesus to Help - Luke 7:4

Luke the beloved physician wrote when Jesus, “had ended all his sayings in the audience of the people, he entered into Capernaum. And a certain centurion's servant, who was dear unto him, was sick, and ready to die. And when he heard of Jesus, he sent unto him the elders of the Jews, beseeching him that he would come and heal his servant”, and in chapter seven and verse four of his book Luke shared how the elders, came to Jesus, they besought him instantlywhere we read:

And when they came to Jesus, they besought him instantly, saying,

That he was worthy for whom he should do this:

The verse reads, “And when they came to Jesus, they besought him instantly, saying, ...” Luke began with the words, “and when” or “and at the time and moment” “they came to Jesus” which means “the elders of the Jews arose and appeared to Jesus who is the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate”, “they besought him instantly” or “the elders entreated, begged and beseeched Jesus hastily, diligently and earnestly”, “saying” which means “uttering, declaring and proclaiming” the following words. Luke shared how the “elders of the Jews” “hastily and diligently” “begged” Jesus by saying the following words.

The verse goes on to say, “... That he was worthy for whom he should do this:” Luke continued with the words, “that he was worthy” which means “that the centurion was befitting, congruous and deserving” “for whom he should do this” or “that Jesus should perform, afford and offer healing to the centurion's servant”. Luke shared how the “elders of the Jews” told Jesus the “centurion” deserved to have Him “cure” his “servant”.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we see how these “elders” not only “begged” Jesus, but they also told Him the “centurion” “deserved” to have Jesus “heal” his “servant”. The “elders” will give the reasons that this “centurion” was “worthy” to have this done for him in the next verse, however, let it suffice us to know that this “Gentile”, who was not a member of the Jewish nation, was being vouched for by people who knew him. God the Father desires to have a personal relationship with every person regardless of their national affiliation. Those who honor the “Jews” and recognize them as God's chosen people have particular attention from God, and those who are wise will not only love the people God loves, but also yield their lives to His Son Jesus who came to be the “Savior and Lord” of the whole world.

Next time Luke shares how people gave Jesus reasons to help the servant of the Centurion because, “loves our nations, and he has built us a synagogue”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
