Give - Luke 6:38

Luke the beloved physician wrote how Jesus said, “love you your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and you shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil. Be you therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful. Judge not, and you shall not be judged: condemn not, and you shall not be condemned: forgive, and you shall be forgiven”, and in chapter six and verse thirty-eight of his book Luke shares how Jesus said, “give, and it shall be given unto you” where we read:

Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.

The verse reads, “Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom.” Luke began with the word, “Give” or “grant, bestow, supply and furnish”, “and it shall be given unto you” which means “and granting, bestowing, supplying and furnishing will be granted, bestowed, supplied and furnished to Jesus' disciples”; “good measure” or “beautiful, handsome, excellent, eminent, choice and surpassing standard, degree and portion”, “pressed down” which means “packed and pressed together”, “and shaken together” or “and agitation, moved and stirred up”, “and running over” which means “and poured out without measure and overflowing”, “shall men give” or “will people both male and female grant, bestow, furnish and supply” “into your bosom” which means “into the front or foreparts of Jesus' disciples' bodies”. Luke shared how Jesus instructed His disciples to be “givers”, and His promise to them was that they would receive a “surpassing, pressed together, stirred up and overflowing” return from others.

The verse continues,For with the same measure that you mete withal it shall be measured to you again. Luke continued with the words, “for with the same manner” which means “because, since, on account and consequently alongside the equal way and likeness” “that you mete withal” or “that Jesus' disciples give out by measure” “it shall be measured to you again” which means “the same will be returned and repaid to them”. Luke shared how Jesus told the disciples listening to Him they would receive according to the “measure” in which they “gave”.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn another directive that Jesus gave to Him disciples. This time He instructed them to “give”, and His promise was that they would receive a return according to the equal “measure” in which they “gave”. God “gives”, and He “gives” abundantly. Those who yield their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord” will be given the ability to “give” and “receive” in a greater measure than they have every known before.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus asks, “can the blind lead the blind?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
