Are You He that Should Come? - Luke 7:19

Luke the beloved physician wrote how Jesus raised the widow of Nain's son, and there came, “a fear on all: and they glorified God, saying, That a great prophet is risen up among us; and, That God has visited his people. And this rumor of him went forth throughout all Judaea, and throughout all the region round about. And the disciples of John showed him of all these things”, and in chapter seven and verse nineteen of his book Luke shared how John's disciples are sent to ask Jesus, “are you he that should come? Or look we for another?” where we read:

And John calling unto him two of his disciples sent them to Jesus, saying,

Are you he that should come? or look we for another?

The verse reads, “And John calling unto him two of his disciples sent them to Jesus, saying, ...” Luke began with the words, “and John” or “and John the Baptist whose name means Jehovah is a gracious giver” “calling unto him” which means “bid to come, summoned and invited to John himself” “two of his disciples” or “two of John's students, pupils and attendants” “sent them to Jesus” which means “discharged and dispatched to Jesus who is the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation”, “saying” or “uttering, declaring, proclaiming and asking” the following words. Luke shared how John the Baptist summoned his disciples and dispatched them to Jesus to ask the following questions.

The verse continues, “... Are you he that should come? or look we for another?” Luke added the words, “are you he” which means “and you, Jesus, the Messiah” “that should come” or “that is to arise and appear”? “Or look we” which means “or should John and his disciples expect, hope and anticipate” “for another” or “that an other person will come to be the Christ”? Luke shared how John desired to know if Jesus was the “Messiah” who was promised or if he and his disciples should “hope and expect” another person to be the promised Christ.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we see how John the Baptist responded to the reports of his disciples concerning Jesus. John the Baptist was in prison at this time, and he began to wonder and doubt whether Jesus was the Messiah or not. This is a question for every person to answer. Is Jesus the Christ or not? When a person learns who Jesus is through the scriptures, they should carefully make a choice to believe and trust in Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”. Those who are wise will understand, Jesus is the Messiah and Son of God.

Next time Luke shares how John's disciples tell Jesus, “John Baptist has sent us unto you”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
