Jesus' Compassion on the Widow - Luke 7:13

Luke the beloved physician wrote, “And it came to pass the day after, that he went into a city called Nain; and many of his disciples went with him, and much people. Now when he came near to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the city was with her”, and in chapter seven and verse thirteen of his book Luke shared how Jesus, “had compassion on her, and said unto her, weep not” where we read:

And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not.

The verse reads, “And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, ...” Luke began with the words, “and when the Lord saw her” or “and at the time and moment the One to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master, and the title given to God the Messiah Jesus observed, noticed, perceived and discerned the widow”, “he had compassion on her” which means “Jesus felt sympathy, pitied and from innermost being yearned for the widow”. Luke shared how Jesus not only noticed the “widow”, but He felt deep “sympathy and pity” for her.

The verse continues, “... and said unto her, Weep not.” Luke added the words, “and said unto her” which means “and uttered, declared and proclaimed to the widow”, “weep not” or “do not mourn or lament with crying from pain and grief”. Luke shared how Jesus told the widow not to “lament” with great grief over her circumstances.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we discover Jesus' “compassion” toward people who “grieve” over the loss of their loved ones. This widow was without her “husband” and her “son”, and we can imagine how devastated she was over her situation. Those she loved and and her livelihood was gone, and she would not only feel abandoned, but also insecure. However, she met Jesus, and Jesus “sympathized” with her, and He encouraged her not to “cry and lament” because He had a plan that would change her situation. God loves everyone, and His plan for the eternal “salvation” for mankind was demonstrated through the “death” of His Son Jesus Christ. God identifies with those who suffer great loss, and because He is “compassionate” toward people and their difficulties, He provided the answer and hope to everyone who will yield their lives to Him.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “young man, I say to you, Arise”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
