Seed That Fell Upon a Rock - Luke 8:6

Luke the beloved physician shared how Jesus said, “A sower went out to sow his seed: and as he sowed, some fell by the way side; and it was trodden down, and the fowls of the air devoured it”, and in chapter eight and verse six of his book Luke shared how some seed, “fell upon a rock” where we read:

And some fell upon a rock; and as soon as it was sprung up, it withered away,

because it lacked moisture.

The verse reads, “And some fell upon a rock; and as soon as it was sprung up, it withered away, ...” Luke began with the words, “and some fell” or “a portion of the seed descended and lit” “upon a rock” which means “on a projecting rock, crag or rocky ground”; “and as soon as it was sprung up” or “and at the moment it began to produce, shot forth and grow”, “it withered away” which means “the seed that fell upon the rock became dry and wasted”. Luke shared how Jesus said the “seed that fell upon rocky ground” “grew quickly”, but speedily wasted away.

The verse continues, “... because it lacked moisture.” Luke added the words, “because it lacked” which means “since and on account that the seed on the rocky ground was without” “moisture” or “dampness, liquid or water”. Luke shared how Jesus said a lack of “moisture” was the reason for the seed that fell on rocky ground “withering”.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we discover Jesus' second example of the “sower” or “farmer” scattering his seed. This time the “seed” fell upon rocky or “hard” ground, and although it “germinated” quickly, it's growth could not be sustained because it lacked “moisture”. Jesus will tell us what this seed type represents in the next few verses, however, let us realize that many people “start well” in their belief and trust in Jesus Christ, and afterward forsake their relationship with Him because they lack “spiritual moisture”. God continually “waters” those who come to Him through His Son Jesus Christ, and as they daily allow Him to minister to their hearts and lives within His scriptures, those who yield to Him will enjoy His company forever and ever.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus says some of the seed, “fell among thorns”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
