Are You the Son of God? - Luke 22:70

Luke the beloved physician wrote how, “the men that held Jesus mocked him, and smote him. And when they had blindfolded him, they struck him on the face, and asked him, saying, Prophesy, who is it that smote you? And many other things blasphemously spoke they against him. And as soon as it was day, the elders of the people and the chief priests and the scribes came together, and led him into their council, saying, Are you the Christ? tell us. And he said unto them, If I tell you, ye will not believe: And if I also ask you, you will not answer me, nor let me go. Hereafter shall the Son of man sit on the right hand of the power of God”, and in chapter twenty-two and verse seventy of his book Luke shared how the religious leaders asked Jesus, “are you then the Son of God?” where we read:

Then said they all, Are you then the Son of God? And he said unto them, You say that I am.

The verse reads,Then said they all, Are you then the Son of God? Luke began with the words, “then said they all or “at that time uttered, declared, proclaimed and asked each, every, the whole and everyone of the religious leaders in the Sanhedrin”, “are you then” which means “therefore, wherefore and these things being so, do you, Jesus, exist as” “the Son of God” or “God's Son”? Luke shared how the “religious leaders” asked Jesus if He was “God's” Son.

The verse goes on to say, “And he said unto them, You say that I am. Luke continued with the words, “and he said unto them” which means “and Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed to the religious leaders”, “You say” or “you, religious leaders, utter, declare and proclaim” “that I am” which means “that I, Jesus, exist as God's Son”. Luke shared how Jesus told the religious leaders they declared Him to be “the Son of God”.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn how the religious members of the “Sanhedrin” questioned Jesus as to whether He was God's Son, and He answered, they said so. We can imagine the ire of these “religious leaders” when Jesus said this as He confirmed their accusation. They believed anyone who identified themselves as “God's Son” was blasphemous, and therefore deserved death. However, Jesus is God's Son, and their passion was greatly misdirected and wrong. Those who put their faith and trust in Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord” will receive forgiveness of their sins and everlasting life with God. Those who refuse to believe and trust in Him shall face Jesus' Heavenly Father with their great error.

Next time Luke shares how the religious leaders say, “What need we any further witness? for we ourselves have heard of his own mouth”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
