Two Going to Emmaus - Luke 24:13

Luke the beloved physician wrote after women told the disciples about Jesus being raised from the dead, “Then arose Peter, and ran unto the sepulcher; and stooping down, he beheld the linen clothes laid by themselves, and departed, wondering in himself at that which was come to pass”, and in chapter twenty-four and verse thirteen of his book Luke shared how, “two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus” where we read:

And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus,

which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs.

The verse reads, “And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, ... Luke began with the words, “and, behold or “and lo, look and consider”, “two of them” which means “two of the disciples of Jesus” “went that same day” or “left and departed the selfsame day as the women told them the news about Jesus being risen” “to a village called Emmaus” which means “toward a dwelling place, abode, habitation and town named Emmaus which means warm baths and its distance from Jerusalem, sixty stadia, or 7.5 miles (12 km); and Josephus mentions "a village called Emmaus" at the same distance”. Luke shared how two of Jesus' disciples left after they heard the women's words to traveled toward a “town” named “Emmaus”.

The verse continues, “... which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs.” Luke added the words, “which was from Jerusalem” which means “that was a distance apart from the city of Jerusalem which means set you double peace and was the capital of Palestine” “about threescore furlongs” or “around sixty stadia or 7.5 miles away”. Luke shared how the two disciples traveled from “Jerusalem” about 7.5 miles to the “village of Emmaus”.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn how two more of Jesus' disciples responded to the women's words concerning Jesus rising from the dead. These two disciples left “Jerusalem” and journeyed about 7.5 miles to a town named “Emmaus”. People respond to death and the resurrection in different ways, and although Jesus was indeed risen from the dead, these two disciples decided to get away from “Jerusalem” and go the the “village of hot baths”. We shall discover more of what happens to these disciples as they journeyed, but for now let it suffice us to know, we can simply believe and trust in Jesus as our “Savior and Lord” and have a personal relationship with God.

Next time Luke shares how the two, “talked together of all these things which had happened”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
