Into Your Hands I Commend My Spirit - Luke 23:46

Luke the beloved physician wrote when Jesus was hanging on the cross, “it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst”, and in chapter twenty-three and verse forty-six of his book Luke shared, “when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into you hands I commend my spirit” where we read:

And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into your hands I commend my spirit:

and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.

The verse reads, “And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into your hands I commend my spirit: Luke began with the words, “And when Jesus had cried or “and at the time and moment the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation shouted, spoke with a loud voice and summoned” “with a loud voice” which means “alongside a massive, great and abundant sound and tone of uttered words”, “he said” or “Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “Father” which refers to “God”, “into your hands” which means “into the help, aid and determining and controlling destinies of men” “I commend my spirit” or “I, Jesus, set before you Father God, my, Jesus' vital principal by which the body is animated and the simple essence, devoid of all or at least all grosser matter, and possessed of the power of knowing, desiring, deciding and acting”. Luke shared how Jesus “shouted aloud” to His Father God and told Him that He committed His “spirit” to Him.

The verse goes on to say, “and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.” Luke continued with the words, “and having said thus” which means “and after uttering, declaring and proclaiming the previous words”, “he gave up the ghost” or “he, Jesus, breathed out His last breath and expired”. Luke shared after Jesus “commended” His “spirit” to His Father God, Jesus breathed His last and expired.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus “shouted” from the cross as He committed His “spirit” to His Father God and afterward “breathed His last”. Jesus died for the sins of the world, and every person who believes and trusts in Him as their personal “Savior and Lord” will be forgiven of their sins and receive everlasting life with God. This is all possible because of Jesus dying on the cross, and those who carefully examine all the details given in Jesus' death should yield their lives to Him who alone is able to “save”.

Next time Luke shares, “when the centurion saw what was done, he glorified God”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
