Soldiers Mocking Jesus - Luke 23:36

Luke the beloved physician wrote when Jesus was hanging on the cross, He said, “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots. And the people stood beholding. And the rulers also with them derided him, saying, He saved others; let him save himself, if he be Christ, the chosen of God”, and in chapter twenty-three and verse thirty-six of his book Luke shared how, “the soldiers also mocked him” where we read:

And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him, and offering him vinegar,

The verse reads, “And the soldiers also mocked him, ... Luke began with the words, “and the soldiers or “and the warriors in the Roman army” “also mocked him” which means “even so and indeed played, trifled and jeered at Jesus”. Luke shared how the “Roman warriors or soldiers” joined in the jeering of Jesus as He hung on the cross.

The verse goes on to say, “... coming to him, and offering him vinegar, Luke continued with the words, “coming to him” which means “approaching and drawing near to Jesus”, “and offering him vinegar” or “presented and brought to Jesus the mixture of sour wine or vinegar and water which the Roman soldiers were accustomed to drink”. Luke shared how the “Roman soldiers” approached Jesus and presented Him with “sour wine”.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn how the “Roman soldiers” who carried out the execution of Jesus on the cross joined in with the “religious leaders” as they “jeered” at Him and presented Him with a “sour wine” to drink. This drink was known to “dull” the pain, but Jesus refused it after realizing what it was. Jesus willingly died for the sins of the whole world, and He endured the “scoffing, sneering, jeering and mocking” because He desired to “save” every person who will yields their life to Him. Those who carefully examine the great lengths Jesus went through to provide salvation for man should submit themselves to Him, receive His forgiveness for sins and inherit everlasting life with God. .

Next time Luke shares how the soldiers say, “if you are the king of the Jews, save yourself”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
