The Whole Multitude Leading Jesus - Luke 23:1

Luke the beloved physician wrote how, “the men that held Jesus mocked him, and smote him. And when they had blindfolded him, they struck him on the face, and asked him, saying, Prophesy, who is it that smote you? And many other things blasphemously spoke they against him. And as soon as it was day, the elders of the people and the chief priests and the scribes came together, and led him into their council, saying, Are you the Christ? tell us. And he said unto them, If I tell you, ye will not believe: And if I also ask you, you will not answer me, nor let me go. Hereafter shall the Son of man sit on the right hand of the power of God. Then said they all, Are you then the Son of God? And he said unto them, You say that I am. And they said, What need we any further witness? for we ourselves have heard of his own mouth.”, and in chapter twenty-three and verse one of his book Luke shared how, “the whole multitude of them arose, and led him unto Pilate” where we read:

And the whole multitude of them arose, and led him unto Pilate.

The verse reads, “And the whole multitude of them arose, ... Luke began with the words, “and the whole multitude of them or “and the entire crowd of the religious leaders who were part of the Sanhedrin” “arose” which means “raised up and stood”. Luke shared how the entire crowd of religious leaders who were part of the Sanhedrin stood up.

The verse goes on to say, “... and led him unto Pilate. Luke continued with the words, “and led him” which means “and guided and directed Jesus” “unto Pilate” or “to Pilate which means armed with a spear and was the sixth Roman procurator of Judah and Samaria”. Luke shared how the religious leaders guided Jesus to “Pilate” who governed over Judah and Samaria where they were located.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn how the Sanhedrin acted after their conclusion about Jesus being the Christ and Son of God. They were convinced that Jesus was a blasphemous man who needed to die, and because they did not have the authority to condemn Him to death, they “led Him to Pilate”. Every detail of Jesus' trial and condemnation was known by Him, and because He desired to bring salvation to mankind, He endured them all. Let all who read these words carefully think through this condemnation of Jesus and yield their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord.

Next time we see Luke share how the religious leaders, “began to accuse him”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
