Two Men in Shining Garments - Luke 24:4

Luke the beloved physician wrote about the women who knew Jesus, “upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulcher, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them. And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulcher. And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus”, and in chapter twenty-four and verse four of his book Luke shared how the women, “as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments” where we read:

And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout,

behold, two men stood by them in shining garments:

The verse reads, “And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout, ... Luke began with the words, “and it came to pass or “and it happened and came into existence”, “as they were much perplexed” which means “while and during the time the women were entirely at a loss and thoroughly nonplussed and in doubt” “thereabout” or “concerning, because and on account of Jesus' body missing” the following occurred. Luke shared how the women were in doubt and contemplating what happened to Jesus' body when the following happened.

The verse goes on to say, “... behold, two men stood by them in shining garments:” Luke continued with the word, “behold” which means “lo, look and consider”, “two men stood by them” or “two male looking beings were standing near to the women” “in shining garments” which means “the men, or angels, were dressed in glimmering, lightened and dazzling clothing or apparel ”. Luke shared how “two angels” were standing near the women as they stood by Jesus' tomb.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn how the women were not alone at the grave of Jesus. Though they were greatly perplexed at why Jesus' body was not there, these “two men or angels” who were dressed in “shimmering and dazzling garments” were standing by them. God knew these women needed to know why Jesus' body was not there, and He will answer their “doubts” through these “angels” in our next verse. For now, let it suffice us to know God knows our every doubt and wonder, and when we yield our lives to His Son Jesus, He will supply everything we need including salvation of our souls. As He supplied an answer for these women, He shall certainly provide the answer for all who put their faith and trust in Him.

Next time Luke shares how the women, “as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek you the living among the dead?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
