Astonished - Luke 24:22

Luke the beloved physician wrote after women told the disciples about Jesus being raised from the dead, “Then arose Peter, and ran unto the sepulcher; and stooping down, he beheld the linen clothes laid by themselves, and departed, wondering in himself at that which was come to pass. And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs. And they talked together of all these things which had happened. And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them. But their eyes were holden that they should not know him. And he said unto them, What manner of communications are these that you have one to another, as you walk, and are sad? And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, Are you only a stranger in Jerusalem, and have not known the things which are come to pass there in these days? And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people. And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him. But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done”, and in chapter twenty-four and verse twenty-two of his book Luke shared how Cleopas continued by saying, “certain women also of our company made us astonished” where we read:

Yes, and certain women also of our company made us astonished, which were early at the sepulcher;

The verse reads, “Yes, and certain women also of our company made us astonished, ... Luke began with the word, “Yes or “Nevertheless, notwithstanding, without exception and moreover”, “and certain women” which means “and particular female human beings” “also of our company” or “who were even so and indeed belonging to the disciples' group of followers” “made us astonished” which means “amazed and threw the disciples into wonderment”. Luke shared how “Cleopas” asserted that there were “women” within their group of Jesus followers who “amazed” the disciples and threw them into wonder as the following occurred.

The verse goes on to say, “... which were early at the sepulcher;” Luke continued with the words, “which were early” which means “who at the rising of the sun or at dawn” “at the sepulcher” or “at the tomb or grave in which Jesus was buried”. Luke shared how “Cleopas” continued to share with Jesus how the “women” among their group went to the “tomb” where Jesus was buried at dawn or in the early morning time.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we see how “Cleopas” continued to share with Jesus about how the “women” in their group who followed Jesus caused them to wonder because they journeyed to the “tomb” where Jesus was buried at dawn. We can imagine Jesus as he listened to “Cleopas” describe what happened when these women went to the tomb where Jesus was buried very early in the morning. This was part of Jesus' plan to reveal Himself to mankind, and everyone who believes and trusts in Him as their personal “Lord and Savior” will be forgiven of their sins and receive everlasting life with God. Let all who consider “Cleopas'” words yield their life to Jesus.

Next time Luke shares how “Cleopas” continued by saying the women, “had also seen a vision of angels, which said he that he was alive”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
