Idle Tales - Luke 24:11

Luke the beloved physician wrote about the women who knew Jesus, “upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulcher, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them. And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulcher. And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus. And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments. And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek you the living among the dead?He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spoke unto you when he was yet in Galilee, Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again. And they remembered his words, and returned from the sepulcher, and told all these things unto the eleven, and to all the rest. It was Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, and other women that were with them, which told these things unto the apostles”, and in chapter twenty-four and verse eleven of his book Luke shared how the women's, “words seemed to them as idle tales” where we read:

And their words seemed to them as idle tales, and they believed them not.

The verse reads, “And their words seemed to them as idle tales, ... Luke began with the words, “and their words or “and the women's speeches, discourses and utterances” “seemed to them” which means “appeared and were seen to the eleven disciples of Jesus” “as idle tales” or “like nonsense or incredible stories”. Luke shared how the “eleven disciples” thought the women's “speeches” were “nonsense”.

The verse continues, “... and they believed them not.” Luke added the words, “and they believed” which means “and the eleven disciples trusted” “them not” or “the women in no way”. Luke shared how the “eleven disciples” did not “trust” or have “faith” in what the women were saying.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we can imagine how incredible the stories of the women must have sounded to the eleven disciples. They had never knew of a person “rising” from the dead on their own power, and to them, death was the finality of a person's life. Therefore, they did not believe the women. Many people have the same difficulties as the “eleven disciples”, and they simply can't and won't believe. Jesus is risen from the dead, and He is the “Savior and Lord” of the world. He died so mankind could be forgiven of their sins, and He was raised back to life to demonstrate how He is able to provide “everlasting and eternal life”. Those who believe in Him shall be “saved”, and those who do not shall discover their error when their life ends.

Next time Luke shares, “Then arose Peter, and ran unto the sepulcher; and stooping down, he beheld the linen clothes laid by themselves”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
