Weep Not for Jesus - Luke 23:28

Luke the beloved physician wrote when Jesus was condemned to be crucified, “as they led him away, they laid hold upon one Simon, a Cyrenian, coming out of the country, and on him they laid the cross, that he might bear it after Jesus. And there followed him a great company of people, and of women,

which also bewailed and lamented him”, and in chapter twenty-three and verse twenty-eight of his book Luke shared how Jesus said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children” where we read:

But Jesus turning unto them said, Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me,

but weep for yourselves, and for your children.

The verse reads, “But Jesus turning unto them said, Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, ... Luke began with the words, “But Jesus or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation” “turning unto them, said” which means “converting and reversing His body toward the women, uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “Daughters of Jerusalem” or “female descendants of Jerusalem which means set you double peace and was the capital of Palestine”, “weep not for me” which means “do not cry, lament and mourn on Jesus' behalf”. Luke shared how Jesus “turned” toward the women who were “following” Him and told them not to “mourn and cry” on behalf of Him.

The verse goes on to say, “... but weep for yourselves, and for your children. Luke continued with the words, “but weep for yourselves” which means “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover cry, lament and mourn on behalf of your own selves”, “and for your children” or “and on behalf of the offspring and progeny which came from the women”. Luke shared how Jesus instructed the women who were following Him to “mourn and lament” on behalf of themselves and their “offspring”.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn of Jesus' care and concern for the “women” who accompanied Him as He walked toward the crucifixion. Though He was battered and bruised, Jesus turned to the “women” who were “weeping” behind Him and instructed them not to “mourn” for Him, but for their own “offspring”. Jesus knew what was going to happen in Jerusalem after He went back to Heaven, and these mothers were going to pay a great price through the death and suffering of their “children”. God knew these things in advance, and He sent His Son Jesus to the world to die for the sins of mankind so they might live eternally with Him. Those who believe and trust in His Son Jesus will be “saved” from the penalty for sin, death, and they shall forever live with God. Let all who read these words not only understand, but also believe.

Next time we see Luke shares how Jesus says, “behold, the days are coming, in the which they shall say, Blessed are the barren”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
