The First Day of the Week - Luke 24:1

Luke the beloved physician wrote how, there was a man named Joseph, a counselor; and he was a good man, and a just(. The same had not consented to the counsel and deed of them;) he was of Arimathaea, a city of the Jews: who also himself waited for the kingdom of God. This man went unto Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. And he took it down, and wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a sepulcher that was hewn in stone, wherein never man before was laid. And that day was the preparation, and the sabbath drew on. And the women also, which came with him from Galilee, followed after, and beheld the sepulcher, and how his body was laid. And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment”, and in chapter twenty-four and verse one of his book Luke shared what happened, “upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning” where we read:

Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulcher,

bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them.

The verse reads, “Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulcher, ... Luke began with the words, “Now upon the first day of the week or “moreover on the first sunrise to sunset of the sabbatical week”, “very early in the morning” which means “at daybreak or dawn”, “they came unto the sepulcher” or “the women who prepared spiced and ointments appeared and went toward the tomb or grave in which Jesus' body was placed”. Luke shared how the women who prepared “ perfumes or aromatic scents and myrrh or perfumed oil” brought them to the tomb where Jesus was buried at daybreak on the day after the Sabbath.

The verse continues, “... bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them.” Luke added the words, “bringing the spices” which means “carrying with them the perfumes or aromatic scents” “which they had prepared” or “that the women made ready”, “and certain others with them” which means “and particular other women alongside and accompanying the women”. Luke shared how the initial women along with some other women were “carrying” their “spices and ointments” to the tomb.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn how the women responded to the death of Jesus with their “spices and ointments”. Though they were grieving immensely, they acted upon their grief by preparing “spices and ointments” to apply to Jesus' dead body. As though they could not wait to arrive at His tomb, the woman, and their friends, arose early on the morning after the Sabbath to carry their “aromatic scents and perfumed ointments” to His gravesite. We shall see what they discover in our next verse, but for now let us imagine the sorrow within these women as they prepared, traveled and purposed to do something with their grief. God loves this kind of passion, and when people sorrow and grieve over their own spiritual conditional and find themselves in need of a relationship with His Son Jesus, they have come to the only One who will truly forgive them and bring them eternal life not only in this life, but also in the life to come.

Next time Luke shares how the women, “found the stone rolled away from the sepulcher”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
