The People Observing Jesus' Crucifixion - Luke 23:48

Luke the beloved physician wrote as Jesus was hanging on the cross, “when the centurion saw what was done, he glorified God, saying, Certainly this was a righteous man”, and in chapter twenty-three and verse forty-eight of his book Luke shared, “all the people that came together to that sight, beholding the things which were done, smote their breasts, and returned” where we read:

And all the people that came together to that sight, beholding the things which were done,

smote their breasts, and returned.

The verse reads, “And all the people that came together to that sight, beholding the things which were done, ... Luke began with the words, “and all the people or “and each, every, the whole and everyone of the people in the crowd” “that came together” which means “who gathered and assembled” “to that sight” or “to the location and place where Jesus was crucified”, “beholding the things which were done” which means “looking upon, watching and considering the happenings and activities that were performed and produced” did the following. Luke shared how every one of the people who assembled at the place of Jesus' crucifixion saw everything that was done that day and did the following.

The verse goes on to say, “... smote their breasts, and returned.” Luke continued with the words, “smote their breasts” which means “beat, struck and thumped their own chests”, “and returned” or “and turned back again”. Luke shared how the crowd of people who watched Jesus being crucified began to “smite” their chests in anguish and grief over what was done and went back to their homes.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we can imagine how the “darkness” that covered the “earth” as Jesus hung on the cross became an ominous moment for all those who were looking upon Him. They may have began to understand an “injustice” was being carried out, and they would pay a price for what was done. This caused them to “beat their chests in anguish” and return to their homes. Anyone who carefully considers all Jesus did so they might be forgiven by God should yield their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”, but woe be to those who refuse to accept Him and what He endured on their behalf.

Next time Luke shares how all Jesus', “acquaintance, and the women that followed him from Galilee, stood afar off, beholding these things”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
