Crucified on Calvary - Luke 23:33

Luke the beloved physician wrote when Jesus was condemned to be crucified, “there were also two other, malefactors, led with him to be put to death”, and in chapter twenty-three and verse thirty-three of his book Luke shared, “when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him” where we read:

And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary,

there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left.

The verse reads, “And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, ... Luke began with the words, “and when they were come or “and at the time the multitude, the people who were crucifying Jesus, Jesus and the two malefactors arrived” “to the place” which means “in the location”, “which is called Calvary” or “that is named and known as Calvary which means a skull”. Luke shared how the people who condemned Jesus and the two malefactors arrived at the “place of the skull” where Jesus and the two criminals were to die.

The verse continues, “... there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left. Luke added the words, “there they crucified him” which means “at Calvary or in that place and location, the people drove Jesus down with stakes and palisade Him”, “and the malefactors” or “and the evil-doers and criminals”, “one on the right hand” which means “one of the criminals was crucified at Jesus' right side”, “and the other on the left” or “and the other criminal was crucified at His left side”. Luke shared how Jesus and the “two malefactors” were “crucified”, and one of the “criminals” was on His right side and the other on His left.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus was “crucified” in the middle of “two criminals”. This will provide a specific demonstration to the world in the next few verses, but for now let it suffice us to know God gives every person a choice. They may receive Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”, or they may not. The decision is theirs. However, there will be eternal consequences for what they choose, so let all who read these words know God loves them and wants them to yield their lives to His Son Jesus who alone is able to save and provide them with eternal life.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
