Pilate Calls Together the Religious Leaders and the People - Luke 23:13

Luke the beloved physician wrote, “when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceeding glad: for he was desirous to see him of a long season, because he had heard many things of him; and he hoped to have seen some miracle done by him. Then he questioned with him in many words; but he answered him nothing. And the chief priests and scribes stood and vehemently accused him. And Herod with his men of war set him at nought, and mocked him, and arrayed him in a gorgeous robe, and sent him again to Pilate. And the same day Pilate and Herod were made friends together: for before they were at enmity between themselves”, and in chapter twenty-three and verse thirteen of his book Luke shared how Pilate, “called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people” where we read:

And Pilate, when he had called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people,

The verse reads, “And Pilate, when he had called together ... Luke began with the words, “and Pilate” whose name means “armed with a spear and was the sixth Roman procurator of Judah and Samaria”, “when he had called together” which means “at the time and moment Pilate summoned and assembled” the following people. Luke shared how “Pilate” summoned and assembled the following groups of people.

The verse continues, “... the chief priests and the rulers and the people, Luke added the words, “the chief priests” which means “the high and principle priests” “and the rulers” or “and the commanders, leaders and magistrates” “and the people” which means “and the men and women within the multitude”. Luke shared how “the high priests, leaders and crowd” were gathered together by “Pilate”.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn how “Pilate” regathered the “religious leaders, magistrates and multitude” after Jesus was returned to him by Herod. We can imagine how Jesus was during this process as He submitted Himself to the will and desire of people. Jesus is God's Son, and at any time He could have stopped this process and eliminated everyone who was jostling Him back and forth. He endured all these things so mankind could be “saved” from their sins and inherit everlasting life with God. Those who are wise will yield their lives to Jesus and receive all that He has for them and their future.

Next time Luke shares how Pilate, “said unto them, you have brought this man unto me, and one that perverts the people … and … I … have found not fault in this man”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
