Women Bewailing and Lamenting Jesus - Luke 23:27

Luke the beloved physician wrote when Jesus was condemned to be crucified, “as they led him away, they laid hold upon one Simon, a Cyrenian, coming out of the country, and on him they laid the cross, that he might bear it after Jesus”, and in chapter twenty-three and verse twenty-seven of his book Luke shared about, “women, which also bewailed and lamented him” where we read:

And there followed him a great company of people, and of women,

which also bewailed and lamented him.

The verse reads, “And there followed him a great company of people, and of women,... Luke began with the words, “and there followed him or “and there accompanied and joined Jesus as attendants” “a great company of people” which means “a large and massive group or crowd of men”, “and of women” or “and female human beings”. Luke shared how a massive group of “people” and some “women” accompanied Jesus as He walked toward the place they would crucify Him.

The verse continues, “... which also bewailed and lamented him. Luke added the words, “which also bewailed” which means “who even so and indeed lamented, mourned and beat their breasts with grief” “and lamented him” or “and mourned, wailed and sung dirges over Jesus”. Luke shared how the “women” who accompanied Jesus were “mourning and crying” over Him.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn how there were many “people” who “came after” Jesus as He walked toward the place He would be crucified. Although many “people” wanted Jesus to die, there were some, particularly “women”, who “mourned and wept” over what was happening to Him. Jesus will address these “women” in our next verse, but for now let it suffice us to examine our own hearts and determine whether the things that happened to Jesus make us sorrow and weep. When we think that He endured all these things so people could be forgiven of their sins, we not only admire Him, but we should humble ourselves and receive Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”.

Next time we see Luke shares how Jesus says, “Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
