Pilate Must Release a Prisoner - Luke 23:17

Luke the beloved physician wrote how Pilate said of Jesus, “I, having examined him before you, have found no fault in this man touching those things whereof you accuse him. No, nor yet Herod: for I sent you to him; and, lo, nothing worthy of death is done unto him. I will therefore chastise him, and release him, and in chapter twenty-three and verse seventeen of his book Luke parenthetically shared, “for of necessity he must release one unto them at the feast” where we read:

(For of necessity he must release one unto them at the feast.)

The verse reads, “for of necessity ... Luke began with the words, “for or “because, since and on account” “of necessity” which means “that which is imposed either by the circumstances or by law of duty regarding to one's advantage, custom or argument”. Luke shared how the “custom and law” required that Pilate do the following.

The verse continues, “... he must release one unto them at the feast. Luke added the words, “he must release” which means “Pilate possesses and owned the idea of allowing, permitting and freeing” “one of them” or “a particular prisoner” “at the feast” which means “during the eating and festival”. Luke shared how Pilate was obliged to “set free” one of the prisoners at the “festival”.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn how there was a “custom” held during the “feast of the passover” where “one prisoner” was to be set free to the people. Pilate was prepared to “punish Jesus” and set Him free, but the people desired that another prisoner be set free and Jesus remain incarcerated. We shall see how the religious leaders and multitude respond to Pilate's desire in our next verse, however, let it suffice us to know Jesus endured this process to provide “salvation” to every person who believes and trusts in Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”. Each person who carefully examines these things is challenged to decide whether they will keep Jesus away from them or set Him free to be who He desires in their lives.

Next time we see Luke share how, “they cried out all at once, saying, Away with this man, and release unto us Barabbas”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
