According
to the writer of Hebrews, Jesus Christ was “after the law
of a carnal commandment, but after the power of an endless life.”,
and in chapter seven and verse seventeen of Hebrews the writer
shows how Jesus is “a priest forever after the order of
Melchisedec” where we read:
For he testifies, You are a
priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.
The
verse begins, “For he testifies,,...”. The
writer began with the word, “For”
which means “because, even as, indeed, no doubt, seeing then,
verily and therefore”, “he testifies”
or “the one with eternal life witnesses, affirms and knows by
divine revelation and inspiration”. Jesus, the one who lives
eternally and provides eternal life, witnesses and affirms what is
about to be declared.
The
verse goes on to say, “You are
a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec”. The
writer continued with the words, “You
are a priest” or
“Jesus is the one who offers sacrifices and in general in busied
with sacred rites” “for ever”
which means “evermore, ageless and eternally”
“after the order”
or “down from, through out and according to the arrangement, post,
rank and position” “of Melchisedec”
which means “king of righteousness” and was “the king of Salem
and priest of the most high God, who lived in the days of Abraham”.
The declaration of Jesus was that He was
“eternally”
“down from and throughout” the “rank and position” of
“Melchisedec”.
When
we meditate upon these words in Hebrews, we see the “testimony and
witness” of the word of God that Jesus is “after the
order of Melchisedec” and not
after the order of Aaron. The Levitical “priesthood”,
which descended from Aaron, was not complete and inerrant and could
not be the ultimate intercession for man. Jesus Christ came after the
“order of Melchisedec” or
“the righteous One” who could thereby intercede on our behalf.
Jesus is superior to all other attempts at intercession to God, and
no one else holds this position. Jesus is the eternal and perfect
“great high priest”,
and all who realize His ultimate position are wise to “bow
their knee” and “confess
with their tongues” that Jesus
Christ is Lord.
Next
time the writer shares how “there
is … a dis-annulling of the commandment”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
