According
to the writer of Hebrews, “the law made nothing perfect”,
but because Jesus brought in “a better hope”
we are able to “draw near to God”
. In chapter seven and verse twenty of Hebrews the writer
tells how Jesus was “made a priest” “not without an oath”
where we read:
The
verse begins, “And inasmuch as not without an oath...”.
The writer began with the word,
“And inasmuch”
which means “and down from, throughout, according to and toward”
“as not without”
or “not separate, apart, without any and besides” “an
oath” which means “an
affirmation made or taken”. “Melchisedec”,
who was a theophany or Old Testament appearance of Jesus, had no need
for a law or “oath”
to be established.
The
verse goes on to say, “...he
was made priest:”. The
writer continued with the words, “he
was made” or
“fashioned, styled and designed ” “priest”
which means “one who is dedicated to sacred rites and things”.
“Melchisedec”
or Jesus was designated as a “priest”.
When
we meditate upon these words in Hebrews, we see how the need for a
law to be established for “Melchisedec” or Jesus to be a
“priest” was not necessary. He was and is the “lawgiver”,
and since he was perfect and without sin, there was no need for “an
oath” to be made. Jesus Christ is the “great high priest”,
Savior and Lord, and when we submit our lives to Him, we have aligned
ourselves not only with the law, but also with the “perfect”
lawgiver.
Next
time the writer shares how the Levite “priest
were made without an oath”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
