According
to the writer of Hebrews, “Melchisedec”
was not a “descendant”
of “Abraham”, and
yet “Abraham” paid
“tithes” to him.
This demonstrated the superiority of the “order of
Melchisedec” over the
“priesthood of Levi”,
and we learned that “Melchisedec”
was an Old Testament appearance or “Theophany” of Jesus Christ.
In chapter seven and verse seven of Hebrews the writer shares
more about the superiority of Jesus as he wrote, “the less is
blessed of the better” where we read:
And
without all contradiction the less is blessed of the better.
The
verse begins, “And without all contradiction,...”. The
writer began with the word, “And without”
which means “and beside, separate and apart”, “all
contradiction” or “each,
every, the whole and everyone of the gainsaying, opposition and
rebellion”. There
was no “opposition or rebellion” that could come against what the
writer is about to declare.
The
verse goes on to say, “...the less is blessed of the
better.”. The writer
continued, “the less” or
“the smaller or worse in size, quantity, age or quality” “is
blessed” which means “praised,
consecrated with solemn prayers, made to prosper and favored” “of
the better” or “by way and
means of the more useful, serviceable, advantageous and excellent”.
The one who gives the “blessing” is greater than the one who
receives the blessing.
When
we meditate upon these words in Hebrews, we see how “Melchisedec”
was the benefactor and “Abraham” was the beneficiary. The
showed “Melchisedec” superior to “Abraham”, and
in the same manner, Jesus Christ is greater than all the previous
“high priests”. There is no argument or “opposition”
to this fact, Jesus Christ is the greatest “high priest”,
mediator and intercessor between God and man that has ever lived, and
we are indeed “blessed” by Him.
Next
time the writer shares how “here
men that die receive tithes”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
