As
the writer of Hebrews continued to share how God's keeps His
“promises”, he
showed how “God swore by Himself”
and “confirmed it by an oath”.
In chapter six and verse eighteen of Hebrews we see how it
was “impossible for God to lie” where we read:
That
by two immutable things, in which it was
impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who
have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:
The verse begins, “That
by two immutable things, in which it was
impossible for God to lie,...”. The
writer began with the words, “That by
two” which
means “in order through and by reason two” “immutable
things” or
“not transposed, transferred, fixed or unaltered deeds,
accomplishments, businesses matters and affairs”, “in
which”
which means “among, through and by that” “it
was impossible”
or “without strength, impotent, powerless, weakly and disabled”
“for God”
which refers to “the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised
of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit” “to
lie” or
“to speak deliberate falsehoods and deceptions”. By both the “the
immutability of his counsel”
and confirmation “by an oath”
God presented His promise to Abraham.
The
verse goes on to say, “we might have a strong
consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set
before us:”. The writer
continues “we might have” or
“hold, possess, keep and own” “a strong”
which means “a mighty, forcible, firm and sure” “consolation”
or “exhortation, comfort, summons, entreaty, supplication,
admonition and encouragement”, “who have fled
for refuge” or “the
ones who flee down and away to sanctuary, recourse and safety” “to
lay hold” which means “to
have power, be chief, master and ruler of” “upon the
hope” or “the joyful and
confident expectation of eternal salvation” “set before
us” which refers to “that is
placed or lies in the sight and front of the Hebrew writer and his
readers”. The reason God gave His “two immutable things” was
that “we” who “flee to and lay hold on God's salvation” may
“firmly know” and be “encouraged” by His promise.
When
we meditate upon these words in Hebrews, we marvel that the Lord
would even bother to give us any “confirmations” or
“oaths” to validate His word, and yet, He does. He desires
for us to know what He declares, He will do. He made the promise to
Abraham and fulfilled it according to His perfect plan. Though
Abraham had to “patiently endure”, eventually he received
what the Lord promised. Jesus Christ was a descendant of Abraham, and
therefore God would be sure to keep His word to him. In order that we
might be saved, Jesus Christ had to be born, live, be without sin,
die for our sins and rise from the grave. This “gospel” or “good
news” from God was certain and sure, and our Great Heavenly Father
insured with His word, it would be accomplished.
Next
time the writer shares about the “anchor
of the soul”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
