The
Hebrew writer shared how “the earth drinks in the rain
that comes often upon it, and brings forth herbs”
to those who sow them into the ground. He also referred to this as a
“blessing from God”.
In chapter six and verse eight of Hebrews we see how “that
which bears thorns and briers is rejected” where we read:
But that which bears thorns and briers is
rejected, and is nigh unto cursing; whose end is to
be burned.
The
verse begins, “But that which bears thorns and briers is
rejected,...” The writer began
with the word, “But”
which is a disassociation conjunction and means that which is about
to be written takes precedence over what was just stated “that
which bears” or “the one
that carry, bring forth and produce” “thorns”
or “bramble or briers” “and briers”
which means “thistles, prickly wild plant which are hurtful to
other plants” “is rejected”
or “is castaway and reprobate”. In contrast to the “green
growing plants” to which the writer referred, the “thorny brier
bushes” are “castaway”.
The
verse continues, “...and is
nigh unto cursing; whose end is
to be burned.”. The
writer added, “and is nigh” which
means “is near and ready” “unto
cursing”
or “execration, imprecation and condemnation”; “whose
end” which
means “whose termination, limit that ceases to be, last in
succession or series, close and purpose” “is
to be burned”
or “burnt up”. The “bramble and brier” bushes which are
produced are destined to be “cursed” and “burnt” in their
finality.
When
we consider these words in Hebrews, we may be able to discover what
the writer means with this example. God sends His “rain”
or “showers” upon the just and the unjust, and He desires for
everyone to enjoy and be blessed by His liberality, and He
demonstrated this by sending His Son Jesus. Some will drink in the
“rain” and be “fruitful” like “green growing
plants”, and others will receive the “rain” and grow as
“bramble bushes and briers”. Those who receive Jesus Christ and
the principles of God will grow like the blessed “green plants”,
and those who reject Jesus Christ shall be as the “thorny bushes”
that are destined for “condemnation”. Let all who read take heed
to this amazing example from the Hebrew writer.
Next
time we see
how the writer was “persuaded
better things of” his
readers,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
