The
Hebrew writer shared how it is “impossible”
for those who have “fallen away”
from faith
and trust in Jesus Christ to “renew
them again unto repentance;”
because they “crucify to themselves
the Son of God afresh, and put him
to an open shame.”.
In chapter six and verse seven of Hebrews
the writer uses the example of “the earth
which drinks in the rain” where we read:
For the
earth which drinks in the rain that comes often upon it, and brings
forth herbs meet for them by whom it is dressed, receives blessing
from God:
The
verse begins, “For the earth which drinks in the rain
that comes often upon it,...” The
writer began with the words, “For the earth”
which means “even, indeed, no doubt, seeing then, verily and
therefore the country, world and land” “which drinks
in” or “imbibes to refresh
and strengthen” “the rain”
which refers to “the literal rain especially a shower” “that
comes” or “appears, arises,
shows, finds and establishes” “often upon it”
which means “frequently and many times on it”. The writer
referred to the “rain showers” that “appeared frequently”
upon the ground.
The
verse goes on to say, “and brings forth herbs meet for
them by whom it is dressed, receives blessing from God:”. The
writer continued, “and brings forth” which
means “delivers, bears and produces” “herbs”
or “green growing plants” “meet for them”
which means “well placed, fit and useful” “by whom it
is dressed” or “be the
certain one who practices agriculture and tills the ground”,
“receives” which
means “takes, partakes and gets” “blessing”
or “praise, laudation, panegyric, fine discourse and polished
language” “from God”
which refers to “the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised
of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit”. When the
“showers” come,
they help to produce “green growing plants” for the ones who
plant them. These are a beautiful “blessing from God”.
When
we think through upon these words in Hebrews, we see how the writer
is using an example to show us the “blessings” that come
“from God”. “Showers” come upon the “ground”
where seeds have been sown, and “herbs” or “green
plants” grow from them. It is the same way with those who will grow
in their relationship with Jesus Christ. The “showers” of God's
word, fellowship and praise are offered as a “blessing” to
all who receive Jesus as their personal Lord and Savior. As the
Hebrew writer continues to challenge his readers with this idea, let
us be one of his students, and when the “blessings” of the
spiritual “showers” come, may we drink in all he has to offer.
Next
time
the writer shares how “that
which bears thorns and briers is
rejected”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
