The
writer of Hebrews shared how Jesus provided “an
unchangeable priesthood” “because he continues forever”.
In chapter seven and verse twenty-five of Hebrews the writer
shared how Jesus is able to “save them to the uttermost”
where we read:
Wherefore
he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by
him,
seeing he
ever lives to make intercession for them.
The
verse begins, “Wherefore he is able also to save them to
the uttermost that come unto God by him,...”. The
writer began with the word, “Wherefore”
which means “from which, of the source from which a thing is known,
whereby and for which reason”, “he is able”
or “Jesus has the power by His own ability and resources” “also
to save them” which means
“even and indeed to heal and make them whole” “to the
uttermost” which means “toward
all completeness and perfection” “that come”
or “who draw near to, approach and assent” “unto God”
which refers to “the Godhead
bodily and trinity which is comprised of God the Father, Christ the
Son and the Holy Spirit” “by him”
which means “Jesus Himself”. Because Jesus holds “an
unchangeable priesthood”, He
is able to “save”
people who “come to God”
to the most complete and perfect state.
The
verse continues, “...seeing he ever lives to make
intercession for them.”. The
writer added the words, “seeing he ever” which
refers to “Jesus always and evermore” “lives”
which means “is quick and alive” “to make
intercession” which means “to
go to or meet for the purpose of conversation, consultation or
supplication and to pray and entreat” “for them”
which refers to “the people
whom Jesus is able to save”.
When
we consider these words in Hebrews, we see the “completeness” and
“perfection” of the Salvation Jesus offers to people. No one else
can “save to the uttermost”, and Jesus' purpose now is to
“make intercession” for those who believe and trust in
Him. Because all other “mediators” die, no other “priest”
or “intercessor” holds the title of “an unchangeable
priesthood”. Jesus “evermore lives” to intercede on our
behalf, and if we only put our faith and trust in Him, we shall be
brought to the “completeness” and “perfection” Jesus has to
offer.
Next
time the writer declares Jesus to be “holy,
harmless, undefiled” and
“separate
from sinners”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
