The
Hebrew writer shared how he desired to leave the “the
principles of the doctrine of Christ”
“if God permit”,
and in chapter six and verse four of Hebrews we begin to see what is
“impossible for those who were once enlightened” where we
read:
For it
is impossible for those who were once
enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift,
and were
made partakers of the Holy Ghost,
The
verse begins, “For it
is impossible for those who were once
enlightened,...” The
writer began with the words, “For it
is impossible”
which means “because, even, indeed, no doubt, seeing then and
therefore it is without strength, impotent, powerless, weakly and
disabled” “for those who were once”
or
“at one
time” “enlightened”
which means “to give light, shine, illumine and render evident”.
The writer referred to people who at one time were “illuminated”
with the word of God.
The
verse goes on to say, “and have tasted of the heavenly
gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost,”. The
writer continued, “and have tasted” which
means “have perceived the flavor, partaken, enjoyed, and made
trial” “of the heavenly”
or “the heavenly origin or nature” “gift”
which means “gratuity”, “and were made” or
“become, come into existence, happened and begin to be”
“partakers” which
means “partners and sharers” “of the Holy Ghost”
which refers to “the sacred, pure, morally blameless or religious
ceremonially and consecrated third person of the triune God, the Holy
Spirit who is coequal and coeternal with the Father and the Son”.
In addition to being “enlightened”,
these people had “tasted of the heavenly gift” and
were “made partakers of the Holy Ghost”.
When
we think through upon these words in Hebrews, we see the beginning
result for people who at one time received the gospel of Jesus Christ
and the Holy Spirit and knew what this “heavenly gift”
was, but have now abandoned it. The writer is referring to those who
once walked in the faith, trusted in the Lord, knew the presence of
His Holy Spirit and had fellowship with God and other believers, but
now have forsaken all of them. Jesus Christ desires to have a
relationship with us, He wants His Holy Spirit to guide us, and He
loves for us to be in fellowship with His Heavenly Father and other
believers, so while we prayerfully consider these areas, perhaps we
would do best to examine our lives and be sure we remain
“enlightened” as
we ask the Lord to remain that way for the rest of our lives.
Next
time we see
the writer refers to those who have“tasted
the good word of God”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
